WHY UTICA IS A BETTER AREA POST-COVID-19.
If you haven’t heard about Utica, Rome, and the Mohawk Valley lately, then there’s much to learn.
This region is experiencing a true economic renaissance, largely due to the redevelopment of the former Griffiss Air Force Base into Griffiss Business and Technology Park; the presence of the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate (Rome Labs), the US “Air Force ‘superlab’ for command, control, and communications research and development, responsible for planning and executing the USAF science and technology program; the marriage of two high tech academies of science into the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly), and the recent announcement of Cree, Inc.’s (Nasdaq: CREE) plans to create the world’s largest silicon carbide fabrication facility here, a state-of-the-art, automotive-qualified 200mm power and RF wafer fabrication facility.
There’s also a 50-mile drone test corridor that will allow government and private companies to test drones and other unmanned aerial systems beyond visual line of sight.
That’s just the $2.23 billion-tip-of-the-iceberg of investment, announced or completed, in just a couple of years.
Utica has been welcoming people since the the first Indigenous peoples found a ford on the Mohawk River and began settling here. From Indian village to British supply fort to early American settlement, from Erie Canal boom town to industrial revolution leader and textile center, electronics giant, and banking and insurance back office processing center, the regional business/ government/ education/ healthcare/ cultural hub that is “Utica” has been a place to stop, rest, refuel and settle down.
And now, Utica, Rome and environs are experiencing another wave of growth.
Downtown Utica is booming with loft apartments, commercial renovations, and revamping of the main arterial highways, while ground has been broken for a new regional hospital, a tournament sports complex, and nearby, a nanotech campus creating 600 well-paying, high tech jobs and many more in the long term.
And it seems like there’s always a new hotel or two going up somewhere.
